The difference between Traditional and Self Publishing

A traditional publishing house will take your manuscript if they believe in it. They will invest in your manuscript; pay for the editing process, the printing process, marketing and they will pay you (although most publishing houses only accept your book when it is already fully edited). The publishing house will owe the rights to your book and for how long depends on your contract with them. You will receive royalties but at a lower rate than when you would self-publish. But they take care of everything you need.

Self-publishing or ‘going Indie’ means that you do everything yourself, which can be costly and time-consuming. You need to pay for the editing process, printing, cover design, marketing and more. You hold, however, the rights to your book and you decide how many royalties you would like to receive from your book and for how much you want to sell it.

You need to think about which type of publishing is best for you. They both have their pros and cons.

If you decide to self-publish, you will open up a whole new world of opportunities. However, it is crucial to be cautious of fraudulent individuals posing as 'publishers'. During your search for self-publishing options, you will come across various Vanity and Hybrid Publishers. These publishers offer different packages for book publication. The only difference between them is their level of support for the author (Hybrid). While some of these publishers are reputable and reliable, there are also numerous scammers out there, so it is important to exercise caution. It is worth noting that some of these publishing packages can be quite expensive, costing thousands of dollars, and even after publication, you may still have to handle many aspects of the process yourself. They may promise you the world, but reality works differently.
